Avoiding obvious classic rock stuff:

The Band, "Up on Cripple Creek"
Otis Redding, "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay"
Any version of "The Girl from Ipanema"
Ella Fitzgerald, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket"
Minnie Ripperton, "Lovin' You"

first dogs and now astrud gilberto! just do us a favor and let bob cratchett add a little extra coal to the furnace this christmas...

(with you on "cripple creek" though... i still hate any song that even vaguely reminds me of the grateful dead. i know i was supposed to miraculously start liking the dead after devendra banhart made them coo, again for some reason, but no way jose)

Roughly a decade's worth of listening to retail music/muzak has taken a toll on me, whether it's Gilberto or elevator music hacks cranking out "The Girl from Ipanema," I'd be finking on everyone if anybody felt inclined to use the song during enhanced interrogation.

"I Can't Help Myself" by the Four Tops
"Casey Jones" by the Grateful Dead
"Green Onions" by Booker T & the MGs (too many film uses, I'm guessing; it attempts to ascribe coolness to a host of people/things that aren't, and isn't something one just throws on, I imagine)
"Where Do the Children Play?" by Cat Stevens
"Stop! In the Name of Love" by Diana Ross & the Supremes

(I was going to say "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe, until I saw that it was recorded in 1979. It sure FEELS a lot older.)

Pox on all things Cat Stevens!

Also, while I don't mind "I Can't Help Myself" or "Stop! In the Name of Love," I find a good chunk of Motown ruined by oversaturation.

Cat Stevens is the main reason I can not sit through Harold and Maude.

Good call on "Green Onions" and "Casey Jones."

"Three Times a Lady" Commodores
"I Like It Like That" - Dave Clark Five
[I will have to second] "Dock of the Bay" - Otis Redding
"On Broadway" - the Drifters
"You've Lost that Loving Feelin'" - Righteous Brothers

I'd probably like that Righteous Bros. song a lot more if it weren't for that fucking "whoa-o-o-oh" part at the end of the chorus.
